Did you catch the Oscars this past Sunday?
Some BIG things happened that have a lot of people talking (like Leonardo DiCaprio finally taking home an award!).
But Lady Gaga’s Oscar performance of “Til It Happens To You” definitely stole the show.
This Oscar-nominated song is about sexual assault, of which Lady Gaga herself is a survivor. The song was featured in the documentary The Hunting Ground, which exposes the epidemic of sexual assault on college campuses and how poorly cases are often handled.
Toward the end of Gaga’s performance, a curtain parted and dozens of young male and female sexual assault survivors stepped forward. Their forearms displayed words and phrases like “Survivor,” “You Are Love,” “Unbreakable,” and “Not Your Fault.” As the survivors joined hands and raised them in solidarity, the audience rose for a standing ovation. Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars were tearing up (as we were watching at home!).
The performance was introduced by Vice President Joe Biden, who encouraged Americans to take action against campus sexual assault.
Let’s change the culture… We must, and we can change the culture so no abused woman or man ever feel they have to ask themselves ‘What did I do?’ They did nothing wrong.
Though the song did not win Best Original Score, it’s made an incredibly profound impact.
Pop singer Kesha, who is currently involved in a lawsuit against her former producer for sexual assault and abuse, tweeted her thanks to Gaga and Vice President Joe Biden. And the performance inspired reality TV star Jade Roper to open up about being raped as a teenager.
We hope the performance similarly helped other survivors feet empowered and that they are not alone.
