I’m Julia, and I want to share a bit of my story with you. A story that wouldn’t have been possible without incredible supporters like you.
When I was born in 1974, my family was involved in a restrictive religious group that discouraged higher education and the pursuit of personal dreams. I saw peers who dared to go to university become ostracized while those who dropped out of school to devote themselves to the group were applauded. For years, I believed my dreams did not matter. It wasn’t until I was 36 that I found the courage to break free from the life I had known and start over. Even though it meant losing relationships with friends and family who remained involved, I had to leave for my own emotional health and for my son’s sake.
As a single mother, I faced enormous challenges, including raising a child with a learning disability. Yet, I was determined to create a better life for my family. Returning to school in my 40s to pursue a diploma in marketing was one of the hardest, but most rewarding, decisions I’ve ever made.
“The Live Your Dream Award from Soroptimist was the lifeline I needed. This award not only helped me afford tuition, but it also gave me the belief that my dreams were worth pursuing. With the education I gained, I’ve been able to advance my career and provide financial stability for my family. Today, I work as a content manager for Best Access Doors, and I take immense pride in the example I’m setting for my children—that no matter the obstacles, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.”
There are so many women out there, just like me, who are ready to change their lives but need support to do so. This giving season, LiveYourDream.org and Soroptimist International of the Americas aims to raise $25,000 to empower 2,500 women in 2025—and with your help, they can.
Because of your support, I’ve been able to rewrite my story and build a brighter future for my family. Together, we can help more women do the same.
Thank you for believing in women like me. Your generosity changes lives.
With gratitude,
Julia Douglas
