Meet Carolyn, a 2017 Live Your Dream Awards recipient whose journey from adversity to achievement is a testament to resilience, empowerment and the impact of investing in women’s futures.
Carolyn has persevered through significant life challenges. After leaving high school at 17 and marrying at a young age, she embraced the joys of motherhood while also navigating the challenges of divorce. With two small children and a GED, she found the courage to pursue a brighter future. At 28, she enrolled in community college, aiming to study nursing and make a difference in the mental health profession. Completing her two-year nursing program was just the beginning. Later, she earned her bachelor’s degree and courageously applied to graduate school for her doctorate in nursing.
Receiving the Live Your Dream Award was pivotal in forging her journey as a leader.

The Live Your Dream Awards supported her education and bolstered her confidence, empowering her to overcome both external and internal challenges.

Nine years later, Carolyn stands as a leader in her community as the proud owner of Balance Mental Health, a thriving practice. Here, she employs 10 clinicians dedicated to offering therapy and medication management, particularly for LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent communities. Through her practice, Carolyn exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose and compassion.
Her journey has also expanded her family, as she married and adopted a teenager from foster care, bringing her household to five children. Today, three of her children are young adults—two in college and one pursuing an electrical apprenticeship—and her family is thriving under her leadership and guidance.
With her sights set on expanding her practice and supporting her children’s educational pursuits, Carolyn remains deeply committed to making a difference.
